RAMW, in addition to many individual members, has been very active in campaigns and fundraising in local elections – giving greater power to the voice and the vote of RAMW members.  We also advocate strongly to DC officials to craft regulations and laws that adequately consider the interests of RAMW members and the greater restaurant industry.

Recent matters of particular interest to RAMW members:

  • The DC ABC Board has made a significant change in the penalties imposed for sale to those underage, along with other changes in the Board’s regulatory approach.
  • ABRA Announces Change to “Sale to Minor Penalty”. A huge change in the otherwise draconian approach to regulation that ABRA has been practicing.  See the RAMW write-up on the issue.
  • “Accrued Sick and Safe Days Act of 2008” was passed but not before a number of amendments were added that make this bill much more reasonable than originally proposed.  Through tireless efforts by the at-large business community and RAMW membership, specifically with Andrew Kline at the forefront, the amendments and rewording of the bill itself were modified to include greater accountability, and delayed eligibility of the benefit until after a year of employment and exempted wait and bartender staff.  SUMMARY OF SICK SAFE ACT. In addition, as with the DC Smoking Ban, hardship waivers will be available.  Bill#: B17-0197
  • The Rodent Control Pilot Program is developing best practices and implementation criteria with a view to expanding the program citywide.
