The Art Institute of Washington Wins Collegiate Culinary Competition at the Taste of Prince George’s Food and Wine Festival

The Art Institute of Washington, a branch of the Art Institute of Atlanta, won first place at the 4th Taste of Prince George’s Food and Wine Festival’s Collegiate Culinary Competition. Competing for the first-time at the annual festival, the culinary arts students set out to really embrace the theme of this year’s competition: “From Farm to Table.”

The winning dishes were: Chesapeake Crab Salad Cucumber Roll and Summer Fruit Ceviche which gave the team the highest score for taste and presentation. Competing against Prince George’s County Community College, both teams had 15 minutes to prepare its dishes for the judges. 

The official judges of the competition were: Gizelle Bryant, reality TV star from Real House Wives of Potomac, Chef Huda, winner of Cut Throat Kitchen, and Ken Gerhart, co-owner of Calvert Brewing Company. Both institutions were required to use ingredients from local farmer markets located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and an area which many of The Art Institute of Washington students reside. As Maryland is known for its seasonal blue crab, The Art Institute of Washington created a dish that was familiar, but added a new experience in taste with its summer fruit including blackberries, melon, and peaches.

Taste of Prince George’s Food and Wine Festival features over 30 restaurants, local & national wineries, live music, creative chef demonstrations, culinary competitions + more from afternoon till dusk. The festival was held on Saturday, August 13 at Six Flags of America.
