Jeff Black's At it Again

December 17, 2013

By Alia Khan, Dining Editor, Bisnow Media

Jeff Black, chef/owner of Black Restaurant Group (BlackSalt, Pearl Dive, and more) opened his newest restaurant last weekend in the quiet neighborhood of Takoma Park, Md.

Republic is an upscale-casual, seasonally driven menu with some emphasis on the seafood dishes Jeff is known for. Black Restaurant Group veteran Chef Danny Wells (below) joins Jeff to create a menu that is both familiar and new. Expect old favorites like the raw bar featuring oysters and Addie's mussels with tomato, lemon, and garlic, as well as new specialties like a Portuguese seafood stewfeaturing salted cod and shellfish in a smoked paprika broth.

The goal is for Republic to be a "casual-yet-refined neighborhoodbistro," so it's only fitting that the restaurant's name is a nod to the neighborhood's nickname, "People's Republic of Takoma Park." Jeff and Danny raided vintage shops all along the east coast to collect the pieces they used to create an eclectic, cozy space that they felt was in keeping with the style of the neighborhood.
