The event took place at the Potomac Mills mall, where onlookers watched Stratford chefs’ construct and ice the massive cake across from the mall’s Food Court.

Certified Master Chef Raimund Hofmeister, Stratford University Director of Culinary Arts and Hospitality, and Certified Master Pastry Chef Jan Bandula, a Stratford instructor, coordinated the design and baking of the cake at the Stratford Baltimore campus.

The cakes were then transported and constructed into the pyramid at Potomac Mills mall.

By the end of the huge endeavour, hundreds of sheet cakes weighing a total of more than 8,000 pounds made up the pyramid cake, which in order to abide by the record rules would not be allowed to have any inside structures or support.

In total, Stratford needed to distribute around 32,000 slices of cake for the record to be considered valid, as all food records must have proof of consumption to prevent waste.

The previous record for the Tallest pyramid cake measured 1.98 m (6 ft 5.95 in) and was achieved by Atul Bakery, Shakti Foundation and Ashwin Sudani in Surat, Gujarat, India, on September 17, 2016.

“Attempting to break the Guinness World Records title is an incredible undertaking for me and for Stratford,” said Hofmeister, who once served as the L.A.-based chef for President Ronald Reagan. “We are very excited about the process, and our cake will show the world that we are capable of doing great things here at Stratford.”

Stratford University named the Fisher House Foundation as the charity of its choice for this record breaking attempt.

The university asked for $1 donations for each slice of cake served up at the mall, with all proceeds donated to the two Fisher House locations in Ft. Belvoir and Richmond, Virginia.

The Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, close to the medical center or hospital they serve.

“Stratford University was founded by a U.S. Navy veteran forty years ago, and we have always had a strong commitment to our veterans and military students,” said Mary Ann Shurtz, Executive Vice President of Stratford University. “It is very fitting for us to host this world record breaking event on Veterans Day, and it is an honor to partner with the Fisher House Foundation, an incredible organization that helps tens of thousands of our military families each year.”
