Three Main Food Industries of Chile

December 1, 2014

FOODS FROM CHILE, SOURCE OF LIFE
Extending for over 2,500 miles along South America’s western coast, Chile is protected by natural barriers—mountains, glaciers, dessert and sea—creating a pristine environment for plants and wildlife to flourish, offering a wide variety of nutritious foods.

The quality products from the region are highlighted in Chile’s three main food industries:

1. PREMIUM WINES, PISCO, MINERAL WATERS AND ARTISANAL BEERS
WINE: Chile’s valleys benefit from an ideal Mediterranean climate and wide diversity of soils. These allow the production of an interesting variety of different grapes in a superior range of terroirs. Most notable is the Carmenere, Chile’s own signature grape, which disappeared from European vineyards in the mid-19th Century. It is considered the deepest, darkest, and the most purple in color of all red grapes.

PISCO: Chilean pisco is a highly versatile grape spirit. Varieties range from mildly to highly aromatic and from abundant wood aromas to none at all, giving sophisticated consumers something to suit every taste. It can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or combined with a broad range of soft drinks, fruits, and others liquors. It is a cross proposal for consumers looking for new sensations.

MINERAL WATER: Chile is known for the purity of its mountains and ancient glaciers, which is reflected in the sources of its mineral waters. They are noted for their high virginity - due to its minimal contact with air and human manipulation - and for its low levels of total dissolved solids (TDS), which increases its purity and lessens its solidity and hardness.

BEER: More than 150 beer producers –including micro-breweries and artisanal breweries—make up this budding industry. The award winning selection offers new varieties and flavors, such as cranberry, honey, quinoa, and myrtle beers.

2. EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL (EVOO)
The optimal climate in the north of Chile, with cold rainy winters and hot and dry summers, allows olives to reach optimum maturity and great fruit expression. In this rich thread of land you'll find fruits of intense character, a spectrum of olive varietals, and natural, sustainable farming.

Chile’s EVOO is born from delicate and attentive harvesting methods to preserve the olives' natural integrity, where olives go from tree to oil in less than 24 hours. Prized for their remarkably low acidity, Chile’s genuine EVOO have quickly become top-of-the-line world industry players.

3. SEAFOOD
Chile is known for an extensive coastline, pure waters, and highly nutritional marine resources, standing out for the vastness and variety of its marine resources. The country is the second-largest salmon producer in the world, responsible for 30% of the salmon consumed globally.

Chile offers a vast array of products, such as: mackerel, scallops, abalones, hake, shrimp, cuttlefish, jumbo squid, clams, hake, king and snow crab, sea urchins, salmon, trout, sea bass and mussels
