Mayor Anthony A. Williams Receives the Duke Zeibert Capital Achievement Award From the Restaurant A

WASHINGTON, DC (April 30th, 2012) – The Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) is excited to announce this year’s recipient of the Duke Zeibert Capital Achievement Award, former Mayor of the District of Columbia, Anthony A. Williams.
The Duke Zeibert Capital Achievement Award was presented this evening at The Hamilton in downtown Washington, DC. Introduced by Councilman Jack Evans, a longstanding supporter of RAMW, was former Mayor Williams, whom held two-terms as Mayor from 1999 to 2007 and remains one of Washington’s most beloved mayors and influential citizens. During his tenure, Mayor Williams laid the ground work for the economic vitality that we have in Washington today while understanding that restaurants were to play a major part in the resurgence of the region. Mayor Williams’ impact on the city is incalculable and defines the consummate Duke Zeibert Award recipient.
“I’m often asked to what I attribute the current vibrant dining and nightlife scene in Washington, DC. And, I always answer, Mayor Anthony Williams had everything to do with it,” said Lynne Breaux President of RAMW. “He recognized that restaurants are often pioneers – the first to invest in opening new businesses in emerging neighborhoods and Anthony Williams created the economic environment to do just that.”
During his two terms, Mayor Williams achieved financial good standing for the city, built up accessible health-care for residents in need and brought a major league baseball team to the District, among countless other achievements. He oversaw the most profound transformation of the city in generations. Mayor Williams has long worked with RAMW. In 2006 he accompanied Ms. Breaux to New York City to support the DC contingent in the Iron Chef competition against Bobby Flay, showcasing DC’s best and brightest culinary talent.
Breaux added, “We fully expect Anthony Williams’ positive influence and impact on the city of Washington and its restaurants to continue with his recent appointment as head of the Federal City Council.”
The Duke Zeibert Capital Achievement Award, named in honor of legendary Washington restaurateur Duke Zeibert, who was the first recipient in 1994, is presented by RAMW at the Annual Restaurant Awards Gala, THE RAMMYS. The award is given to a member of the community whose dedication and leadership have contributed to the success of Washington’s vibrant restaurant industry.
Past honorees of this prestigious award include Robert Egger founder of DC Central Kitchen; the late restaurateur Jean-Louis Palladin; John Latham, owner of Clyde’s Restaurant Group; Abe Pollin, developer, sports team owner and philanthropist; Paul Cohn, Sr. Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Capital Restaurant Concepts; former Washington Post restaurant critic Phyllis Richman; the dean of Washington ABC lawyers, the late Dimitri Mallios; Washington’s Man About Town, WTOP’s Bob Madigan; and, last year’s winner, José Andrés, chef/owner of ThinkFoodGroup and tireless advocate for world hunger initiatives.
On March 26th, hundreds of the Washington, DC metropolitan area’s top restaurateurs, chefs and key restaurant industry players gathered at the Ritz-Carlton Downtown in Washington, DC as the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) announced the nominees for its annual RAMMY Awards. The 2012 RAMMY Award winners will be named at the 30th annual RAMMY Gala on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. This year’s RAMMY Gala theme is “Hats Off to Restaurants!” honoring the extraordinary accomplishments of the Washington, DC regional restaurant scene over the past year.
