Silver Diner Awards $20,000 to Three Local Schools

At the end of May, RAMW Member Silver Diner Awarded $20,000 to three local schools which designed innovative nutrition and physical fitness programs. From a press release:
 
ROCKVILLE, Md., May 23, 2013 - Silver Diner has an active community school program, Eat Well Do Well, and has contributed more than $350,000 to date for nutrition or physical fitness programs at local schools. This year, Silver Diner added a new contest and award, the Eat Well Do Well Challenge Grant. Schools involved with the Eat Well Do Well program, which allows diners to link frequent dining cards to participating schools, were asked to submit their most innovative school nutrition and physical fitness programs via video entry. Today, Silver Diner announced the winners.

The selected winner was Pine Spring Elementary for their Bobcat Boot Camp and Fruit of the Week program. The school won $10,000 to be spent towards these programs.   Runners up included Luxmanor Elementary for their walking club and healthy snack campaign; and Stenwood Elementary for their Getting Fit with Wellnet program.  The two runners up each received $5,000 for their program. And, during the awards ceremony, a surprise announcement by Robert Giaimo, Silver Diner president, CEO and co-founder, gave $1,000 to each of the three additional schools.

Six schools were selected in the finals and included Barrett Elementary, Arlington, Va.; Clara Barton Elementary, Cherry Hill, NJ; Luxmanor Elementary, Rockville, Md.; Montessori School of Oakton, Fairfax, Va.; Pine Spring Elementary, Merrifield, Va.; and Stenwood Elementary, Merrifield, Va.

Judges included WTOP radio’s Bob Madigan, who is a long-time advocate for nutrition and children; Cornell McClellan, a board member with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Cornell is also a fitness consultant and personal trainer for the First Family and owner of Naturally Fit in Chicago. Lauren Darensbourg, MPH with the President’s Council also participated, as did Joy Dubost, PhD, R.D., director of nutrition and healthy living with the National Restaurant Association.

“We’re delighted to be able to help these worthwhile school programs,” said Silver Diner President, CEO and co-founder Robert Giaimo. “We strongly believe in working together with communities to keep children healthy and fit and helping to overcome obesity.”

Silver Diner’s commitment to schools and children is evident in their restaurants with their extensive kids menu with more than 17 entrees automatically served with fruit or vegetable and milk or juice. In addition to having its own not-for-profit school initiative “Eat Well Do Well”, Silver Diner was one of the first restaurants to sign on with the National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell initiative. The Silver Diner kids menu has the most Kids LiveWell items of any menu in the country.  

Recently, Silver Diner was given the National Healthful Innovations Award by the National Restaurant Association for its kids menu.
