The first Restaurant Awards Gala was held in 1982 and was attended by a small handful of area restaurateurs. It has now grown to a festive, highly anticipated, “creative,” black-tie evening celebrating Metropolitan Washington Area restaurants with over 1600 in attendance. It is one of the only events of its kind in the country and is the biggest annual fundraiser for the association.
The first Metropolitan Washington Restaurant Week was held in the months after the attacks on September 11. The semiannual event is held twice a year, once in winter (usually mid-February) and once in summer (usually mid-August).
