Key Things to Know about the Pope's Visit to Washington
Washington, DC will be welcoming Pope Francis during his United States visit from September 22-24. It is projected that his visit could bring as many as 100,000 people to the District similar to President Obama’s first Inauguration. Pope Francis' route will take him all throughout the city, so a vast majority of public transportation and roads will be greatly congested and affected.
The mayor's office has launched www.pope.dc.gov to serve as your one-stop destination for information on the Papal Visit – including the Pope’s schedule, road closures, public transportation adjustments and more. Review the information to plan accordingly during the Pope's visit.
The Pope's Daily Schedule is:
Afternoon: Apostolic Nunciature at the Naval Observatory
Morning: White House Welcoming Ceremony
Midday: Papal Parade
Midday: Prayer with US bishops at Saint Matthew’s Cathedral
Afternoon: Junipero Serra Canonization Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
Morning: Speech to the Senate and House of Representatives
Middday: St Patrick’s Catholic Church and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington

Also note, Massachusetts Ave., NW between Observatory Circle South and 34th Place NW will be closed to all northbound traffic. Southbound traffic will be permitted between 34th Street NW and Waterside Drive NW. All northbound truck traffic will be diverted onto Q Street NW at Sheridan Circle NW. All other northbound traffic will be diverted onto Rock Creek Parkway at Waterside Drive NW. All southbound truck traffic will be diverted east on Garfield Street NW or continue south on Wisconsin Avenue. Massachusetts Avenue NW will be closed to all traffic intermittently.
