New Face Mask Orders in DC & MD for Restaurants 4/15

April 15, 2020
Dear Operators,

We have some important updates to share with you as new Orders were issued today in DC and MD impacting restaurant operators.

DC -  Earlier today, Mayor Bowser issued an Order requiring restaurant workers to wear gloves and cloth or surgical masks while at work.  All gloves and masks shall be procured by the business. This will go into effect on April 17th at 12:01am. This gives operators a short window to procure supplies if they need to, and we expect enforcement will be reasonable, understanding all operators currently open for business are making every effort to be in compliance as soon as possible. A press release from the Mayor’s Office suggested it is required that customers of food sellers also wear masks. Click here for DC DOH tips for using non-medical face masks.  Mayor Bowser also extended the Public Health Emergency until May 15th. Click here for the Order.

Maryland - Governor Hogan also issued an Order today that states all food service establishments shall require staff who interact with customers to wear a face covering. All customers over the age of nine are required to wear a face covering when entering a food establishment. This Order goes into effect on April 18th at 7am, and businesses are expected to comply at this time.  Click here for the Order.

Virginia - Governor Northam extended the shutdown order for nonessential businesses until May 8th, and during today’s press conference stressed that the ‘Stay-at-Home’ order is still in effect until June 10th.
While Virginia is not currently requiring restaurant workers to wear face masks and/or gloves, it is likely that this will be required in a future Order, so we encourage you to get a plan in place now.
