Jug & Table Introduces Refocused, Rustic Wine Program

June 11, 2019

Newly Appointed Wine Director Chas Jefferson Brings Natural, Table Wines to Adams Morgan

Washington, DC (June 11, 2019) – Jug & Table (2446 18th Street NW; 202-232-7663), the casual, music-themed wine bar situated under sister restaurant Roofers Union, announced today a fresh wine program focused on sustainable, natural, biodynamic and organic wines. The new bottle and tap wines will change regularly with the season, but will always offer a nod to the rustic table wines that echo the terroir of their origin.

Chas Jefferson, freshly minted Wine Director overseeing both concepts, has spent the past two months exploring a variety of red, white, rosé, orange, and other unique wines that each allow the drinker to experience a distinct taste and origin. Beginning in June, guests can enjoy more than 30 wines by the glass, eight of which are poured on draft and offered in sizes ranging from a glass to a jug intended to be shared among friends. All of the wines come from small, thoughtful producers in both the Old and New World, that run the gamut of flavor profiles and style.

For summer, Jug & Table will pour some surprising hot weather wines, including unfiltered rosés, orange wines and sparkling selections. A non-vintage fortana from Mirco Mariotti in Emilia Romagna, Italy is made from indigenous red grapes that emerge as both funky and full of fruit. Montinore Estate’s “Vivace” is one of the oldest certified organic and biodynamic vineyards in the US. The Willamette Valley blend of gewürztraminer and müller-thurgau grapes is off-dry, effervescent, and totally refreshing. And on tap, Jefferson has chosen a light pink sparkling from Domaine de la Patience, which blends grenache and syrah sourced from sustainable vineyards in Languedoc-Roussillon, France.

White selections represent those self-identified as ‘fruity & fun’ to those styled with more ‘mineral & grassy’ characteristics. Jefferson has focused his inaugural menu on somewhat obscure varietals that he hopes will educate both the novice and experienced oenophile. He said, “European producers are bringing a range of overlooked grapes back into focus, and I was thrilled to secure a number of allocated wines that guests simply cannot find anywhere else in DC.” These wines include French blends like a pinot auxerrois and sylvaner from Les Vins Pirouettes in Alsace, a loin de l’Oeil from Domaine Philemon in Gaillac, and an organic viognier and altese from Dom Nicolas Gonin in Baume Dauphinoises. Relatively new to the market, Jug & Table will also be among the first to offer Virginia winery Rosemont’s “Hybrid League White Blend” on tap. A predominantly vidal blanc wine, it represents a beautiful evolution in the terroir of Southern Virginia.

On his inaugural menu, Jefferson has chosen to explore several emerging regions and offers guests selections from near unheard-of producers. Those looking for Old World style will find unique selections from Castilla y León, Spain, Montecucco, Italy, Carnuntum, Austria, or Côte du Forez, France. On paper, the wines appeal to all tastes, with familiar varietals like sangiovese, Malbec or pinot noir. But Jefferson hopes guests will see and taste the qualities that make each wine a standout. The barbera comes from Valli Unite, Italy’s only natural wine co-op, and its soft elegance will surprise any fan of the grape. Other options are unfiltered, support charities local to the winery, or simply drink beautifully.

Of course, an evening of wine wouldn’t be complete without food. Jefferson is prepared to help guests make pairings from Executive Chef Jenn Flynn’s menu to make every glass of wine even better. This season he is recommending the Alp Blossom Cheese with the Les Vins Pirouettes in Alsace to highlight floral flavors with hints of thyme. Those looking for something on the meatier side will love Chef’s Bresaola Melt with the Nero di Troia and Aleatico, Calcarious Vinetto 2018. The high acid light red wine has floral raspberry notes that cut through the fat of the sandwich delicately.
