Chatter: Connecting the Metropolitan Dots

To help build a more sustainable, transit-oriented community, Arlington County and the City of Alexandria have agreed to go modern. Streetcars will soon appear on NoVA roads, and we’ve got the run-down on the big change. But before streetcars can even hit the roads, a special transit system must be built. A five-mile transitway, which will run from the Pentagon City Metrorail station to the Braddock Road Metrorail station, is currently being designed and constructed.

This transitway, titled Crystal City/Potomac Yard (CCPY), will operate as a bus rapid transit system and use specialized lanes. It’s expected to open in December 2013. Once the streetcar project begins, the specialized lanes will allow for streetcars and buses.

Arlington will have two lines traveling along Columbia Pike and Route 1 to the border of Alexandria. And, Arlington officials were conducting an environmental assessment of the conversion for their portion of the transitway.
