The 10 strongest retail markets- New report examines which cities are ripe for restaurant expansion

The Washington, D.C., area topped the list of the nation’s most healthy retail markets as a growing number of restaurant companies and retailers ramp up expansion, according to a report released Monday.

San Francisco, New York City, Boston and San Diego also ranked high as attractive retail markets in the U.S. National Retail Report, which was published by ChainLinks Retail Advisors, a real estate services and brokerage organization, in partnership with commercial retail brokerage firm Terranomics.

The report evaluates aspects of shopping center markets in more than 40 metropolitan areas, looking at vacancy rates, absorption, construction and rental rates. The authors also looked at macroeconomic trends, such as unemployment rates, housing starts and income growth, as well as overall retailer demand.
