Emanuel wants to streamline inspections for restaurant start-ups
June 18, 2012
New Chicago restaurants will have fewer inspectors from City Hall darkening their doors in a move Mayor Rahm Emanuel said is designed to help the businesses get off the ground.
It's the latest push to cut government red tape from the mayor, who says he wants to make the city more business-friendly.
Lastmonth he cut the number of business licenses in Chicago by about two-thirds. And last fall he pushed a self-inspection system for "low risk" food establishments like grocery stores, corner shops and some gasstations.
On Wednesday, Emanuel criticized inspection procedures that he said too often leave restaurantowners scrambling to fix things so they can open their doors and start making money.
