Medicare Part D Notification

September 27, 2011

The Medicare Part D notification is something you must send to your eligible employees to let them know whether or not their drug coverage is creditable. And, it must be done by October 15, 2011.

It can get confusing, so here are a few FAQs for you:
Q:  What is creditable coverage?
A:  This means that the coverage offered is expected to pay, on average, as much as the standard Medicare prescription drug coverage.

Q:  How do I determine whether an individual is eligible or not?
A:  This form – Creditable Coverage Simplified - clearly explains how you can determine eligibility. Even if you don’t have any employees 65 or older, you must still send the notice and do the reporting.

Q:  Can you provide a sample of what I’m supposed to send to employees?
A:  Yes, use one of the linked notices and send to all your employees via mail or email. You can customize the document with your company name/carrier/contact information. We suggest sending it to all, since an individual’s status may change unexpectedly and become eligible, i.e., disability.

Q:  What next?

A:  You need to visit this website and advise Medicare and CMS of your plan’s creditable Rx coverage (only available online).

Please note that both the notice to the employees and the reporting on this website are required actions by the government.
