Zagat Presents 'A Gastronomic Adventure' at Taberna del Alabardero

Step into elegant old-world Madrid as an exclusive Zagat guest for a sumptuous wine dinner at Taberna del Alabardero Sunday, May 20. This top-rated Spaniard near the World Bank has been transporting diplomats and gourmands for the past 23 years with its white-glove opulence and delicious, authentic food.
The Evening: On this special night, our guests will be welcomed with a reception in Taberna del Alabardero's plush main dining room. Dinner will be served in the La Granja room, which offers a view into the chef’s kitchen. Executive chef Javier Romero and sommelier Gustavo Iniesta will provide insights into the dishes and the Iberian wine pairings throughout the meal. Expect a lively dialogue - especially as those wine pairings kick in.
The Food: A hearty tomato-vegetable soup will lead the parade of classic-yet-contemporary fare. A grilled squid salad comes next, followed by red snapper with a fava bean stew. Spanish-style roasted beef with red cabbage and sauteed potatoes is likely to taste nothing like what grandma made for Sunday dinner (unless she was a top-flight Spanish chef). A luscious peach ragout with crème custard is the sweet ending.
The Wine: Spanish viniculture will be showcased. Sparkling Cava will begin the festivities. Sherry will accompany the soup. Expertly chosen pairings will include a Valsotillo Crianza 2006 D.O. Ribera del Duero with the meat course and a Malaga with dessert.
Event Details: $145 for five courses with paired wine and cocktail reception; tax and gratuity included. Complimentary parking at the garage is located next door to the restaurant's entrance on 18th Street.
