2019 James Beard Foundation Award Restaurant and Chef Semifinalists Announced

Congratulations to all the James Beard Foundation semifinalists in the 2019 Restaurant and Chef Awards - this being the "long list" before the list is winnowed down to the official finalists. On Wednesday, March 27, 2019, the Foundation will announce the final nominees for all Award categories, including their Media and Restaurant Design Awards, during a press conference in Houston, TX. The event will take place at 10:00am EST and will be streamed live online (details coming soon on the JBF website) and live-Tweeted via the James Beard Foundation Twitter feed.

The 2019 James Beard Awards Gala to announce the winners will take place on Monday, May 6, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The 2019 Leadership Awards will be held on Sunday, May 5 in Chicago, and the 2019 Media Awards will take place on Friday, April 26, at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in New York City. Tickets to both the Awards Gala and the Media Awards will be on sale beginning March 27 at jamesbeard.org/awards.

Following are this year's RAMW member James Beard Foundation Award nominees, many of which are familiar as RAMMY Award finalists and winners:

  • Best New Restaurant: Spoken English
  • Outstanding Chef: Vikram Sunderam, Rasika (2013 RAMMYS New Restaurant of the Year & Beverage/Mixology Program of the Year Finalist; 2015 RAMMYS Service Program of the Year Finalist)
  • Outstanding Chef: Fabio Trabocchi, Fiola (2013 RAMMYS Chef of the Year, 2014 RAMMYS Formal Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year & 2016 RAMMYS Service Program of the Year Winner)
  • Outstanding Pastry Chef: Pichet Ong, Brothers and Sisters (2018 RAMMYS Pastry Chef of the Year Finalist)
  • Outstanding Restaurant: Jaleo (2013 RAMMYS Upscale Casual Restaurant of the Year & 2018 RAMMYS Employee of the Year Finalist)
  • Outstanding Restaurateur: Ruth Gresser, Pizzeria Paradiso (2015 RAMMYS Beer Program of the Year Winner - Georgetown location)
  • Outstanding Service: Marcel's by Robert Wiedmaier (2013 RAMMYS Wine Program of the Year, 2015 RAMMYS Service Program of the Year & 2016 Formal Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year Winner)
  • Rising Star Chef of the Year: Kwame Onwuachi, Kith and Kin
  • Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic: Amy Brandwein, Centrolina (2016 RAMMYS Chef of the Year Finalist; 2018 RAMMYS Chef of the Year Winner)
  • Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic: Erik Bruner-Yang, Brothers and Sisters, Spoken English, Maketto (RAMMYS 2016 Chef of the Year Finalist; RAMMYS 2018 Upscale Casual Restaurant & Casual Brunch of the Year Finalist)
  • Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic: Haidar Karoum, Chloe
  • Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic: Nobu Yamazaki, Sushi Taro (2018 RAMMYS Upscale Casual Restaurant of the Year Finalist)
