Foie Gras Initiative Qualifies for November Ballot

The DC Board of Elections this week certified Initiative 86, sending the proposed foie gras ban to voters this November.

  • Fines on the Table: If passed, the Prohibiting Force-Feeding of Birds Act would fine restaurants and retailers $1,000 to $5,000 per violation for selling foie gras starting July 2027. Proponents say nearly 50 DC restaurants list foie gras on their menus.
  • More Ballot News — I-87 Now Expected on Spring Ballot: ICYMI — Initiative 87, which would raise the minimum wage to $25 by 2029, eliminate the tip credit, and restrict service charges, was pushed off the fall ballot after RAMW's legal challenge and is now expected to appear on the spring 2027 special election ballot.
  • Closures Data Makes the Case: RAMW's mid-year closures report — which found mid-priced restaurant closures fell 54% following DC Council's Initiative 82 reform — drew wide attention, including a Sunday Washington Post editorial.
  • RAMW Is Monitoring: RAMW is tracking both ballot initiatives and will keep members updated. Contact Che with any questions.
